Cartagena is a hidden gem on the Spanish coast, offering a unique blend of history, culture, and Mediterranean charm. It’s my favorite city in this region of Spain (Murcia) and I’ve visitied it many times ever since my parents migrated to Spain a couple years ago. Unlike many other tourist hotspots, this city remains relatively undiscovered and has an authentic Spanish atmosphere. Whether you love exploring ancient ruins, visiting fascinating museums, or simply strolling through picturesque streets, Cartagena is a must-visit destination!

Cartagena is packed with incredible activities, especially for history and culture lovers. The city is packed with numerous museums—so many that you’d need several days to explore them all! To help you make the most of your trip, I’ve highlighted the must-visit museums below, with a full list available later in this article.

Visit the Roman Theatre
One of the city’s most iconic landmarks. If you are visiting Cartagena you can’t skip this one! The roman theatre (Teatro Romano de Cartagena) is located in the heart of the city centre and close to the harbour. I also recommend a visit to the park called Mirador Parque Torres, located nearby, with view of the theatre. This viewpoint has a spectaular sunset view of the theatre and the city!
Stroll around the harbour
Enjoy the scenic waterfront and the fresh sea breeze. Also make a stop at the Naval Museum Cartagena while you are here. Cartagena is a stop of many cruise lines so you might also spot some impressive big cruise ships.
Shop in Calle Mayor
The city’s main shopping street, lined with well-known brands, charming boutiques and cafés. There are some beautiful buildings along the route like the Palacio Consistorial de Cartagena and Casino de Cartagena.
Visit Plaza de San Sebastián
A picturesque square in the heart of the city centre with local charm. The square is small but the buildings make a worth a stop because of the pretty buildings surrounding the square. It’s a place where the locals gather during festivities.

Shop-till-you-drop in Espacio Mediterráneo Shopping Mall
If you love shopping, Espacio Mediterráneo Shopping Mall is a must-visit! With a vast selection of stores, you can easily spend half a day—or even a full day exploring everything it has to offer. Beyond shopping, the mall (and just outide the mall) also features a great variety of food options, making it the perfect place to refuel after a shopping spree (my personal favorite is taco bell).

With its ornate façade and grand design, this building is a must-see for architecture lovers. Be sure to step inside—the magnificent staircase is truly a highlight! If you’re visiting during Christmas, you’ll also be treated to its beautiful festive decorations, adding extra charm to this already stunning landmark.
Museo Foro Romano Molinete
The Museo Foro Romano Molinete is a must-visit archaeological museum that brings Cartagena’s Roman forum to life. Here, you can explore the ruins of ancient temples, streets, and public buildings that once formed the heart of Roman Cartagena. - Casino de Cartagena – A private members club with a beautifully preserved interior. Unfortunately not open for tourists. I read there is an guided tour every saturday at 12, for a small fee but there is limit information to find about this.
- Augusteum– A Roman temple dedicated to Emperor Augustus. Entry: €3. Open daily.

I recommend to park at Parking del Puerto, from this parking lot, you can easily walk into both the city centre and the harbour. Prices are also reasonable for it’s location (1.70€/hour).

Why visit Cartagena?
Cartagena blends history, culture, and a relaxed vibe—perfect for travelers looking for something unique. From ancient sites to charming streets and great food, it’s a place that leaves a lasting impression. In my opinion, it’s also a hidden gem, as the city hasn’t been discovered by mass tourism yet.
