Magical Speulderbos & 10 Tips for Fall Forest Photography

The Speulderbos is often considered the most beautiful forests in the Netherlands. It’s located near my hometown Ermelo, as part of the greater Veluwe area, which is in the middle of the Netherlands. It’s the perfect place to capture stunning forest photos in the fall—especially with enchanting sunbeams. Photographers drive long distances to capture this magical forest!

Living nearby, I patiently waited for the ideal conditions to finally take these magical shots. I had long wanted to photograph sunbeams, particularly in autumn when the forest is painted in breathtaking fall colors. In this article, I’m excited to share some essential tips for fall forest photography, to help you get the perfect dreamy autumn photos!

1. Weather Conditions Are Key

The ultimate dreamy fall forest photos usually contain mist and/or sunshine, and these two combined create magical sunbeams. Therefore capturing sunbeams requires the perfect mix of both. Without the right weather, getting that magical effect is nearly impossible. Check the weather forecast thoroughly, even the night before. Look for mist predictions and a bit of sunshine. A partly cloudy day works too, as long as the sun occasionally breaks through the clouds.

2. Choose the Right Time

Go as early in the morning as possible since mist usually disappears as the day progresses. Early mornings also provide the best lighting. If you’re shooting on a very bright sunny day, avoid midday when the light is too harsh.

3. Best Season for Stunning Photos

If you want vibrant fall colors, plan your visit between mid- to late October and mid-November. Depending on the weather conditions it varies from year to year. This year, 2025, the autumn colours arrived early, peaking already mid-October, while last year it was still green untill late October.

Generally, the Speulderbos is still quite green in October so early november would be better. However Speulderbos is beautiful any time of the year! The summer offers a vibrant green setting, while winter can be magical with a layer of snow.

4. Use the Right Camera and Lens

Bring your best camera and a zoom or telephoto lens. I shot these photos using a Canon DSLR. A zoom lens enhances the sunbeam effect by pulling distant light closer, making the mist more visible.

If you only have a smartphone, don’t worry—modern smartphones can take impressive photos, and some even allow manual settings. Howver be aware that using a zoom on a phone will never yield high quality images as the zoom is a digital zoom.

5. A Tripod is a Must

A tripod is essential for sharp, clear images. There are many lightweight tripods available, including options for smartphones. A steady setup ensures you capture the best possible shot.

6. Finding the Perfect Composition

Creating a strong composition in the forest can be tricky. Look for elements that add depth and interest, such as a winding path, a unique tree, or even a fallen log. Adding a person or, if you are lucky, a wildlife encounter can enhance the photo even more!

7. Camera Settings Matter

For these dreamy shots, I used a slightly longer shutter speed. My images turned out slightly overexposed, but I personally don’t mind it. To avoid overexposing you could decrease the aperature (higher f-number). For more tips check here.

8. Post-Processing for the Final Touch

If your photos aren’t as sharp or well-composed as expected, post-processing can help. Lowering contrast can create a more ethereal look. I also added a subtle dark vignette to draw attention to the center of the image. However, I did minimal editing on these photos because they were already stunning straight from the camera!

Photo tip: the most photogenic road in the netherlands

Located near Speulderbos, the road from Ermelo to Drie is a stunningly photogenic road that winds through the forest. Many photographers have used this picturesque setting for wedding photos and other shoots. There is a parking area nearby, and from there, it’s just a short walk to the best spots.

When taking photos, be mindful that this is still an active road—always stay aware of incoming traffic and avoid blocking the way. Fortunately, the road is generally quiet, providing plenty of opportunities to capture beautiful shots.
