Top things to do in Heraklion:

2. Chania – Picture-Perfect Harbor Town

Chania is a postcard-worthy town with a charming old harbor and colorful Venetian buildings.

Highlights in Chania:

  • Enjoy the view from the Küçük Hasan Mosque, overlooking the waterfront and the colorful houses.

  • Sip a creative cocktail at Boulevard of Broken Dreams, a cozy bar tucked away in a dreamy little street with umbrellas.

This beautiful town offers a perfect mix of cultural richness and beachside leisure. Rethymnon is ideal for a laid-back stay. We stayed at the lovely Macaris Suites & Spa, with great sea views and a relaxing atmosphere.

4. Knossos Palace – A Glimpse into Ancient Civilizations

No trip to Crete is complete without visiting the Palace of Knossos, one of the most important archaeological sites in Greece. This ancient Minoan palace is steeped in myth and history – it’s said to be the legendary Labyrinth of King Minos.

5. Kourtaliotiko Gorge – A Scenic Hike Through Nature

Crete is famous for the 16km Samaria Gorge, but if you’re looking for a shorter (yet equally stunning) hike, Kourtaliotiko Gorge is a great alternative. Hike the stunning Kourtaliotiko Gorge and experience some of Crete’s most breathtaking natural scenery. This scenic trail leads you past cascading waterfalls, crystal-clear turquoise pools, and dramatic rock formations. The hike is about 8km and the route is a is one-way. At the end of the trail, you can easily catch a taxi from one of the nearby tavernas back to the parking lot.

6. Patsos Gorge – A Hidden Green Gem

Another lesser-known but breathtaking gorge is Patsos Gorge. Surrounded by lush greenery and natural beauty, it’s perfect for nature lovers who prefer a quieter trail. The hike also included ropes and ladders as you go further, we decided to just walk the beginning of the trail which is relatively easy.

7. Geropotamos Beach – Swim Through a Rock Arch

This wide, sandy beach boasts crystal-clear waters and a natural rock arch you can swim through. Since it’s a bit of a distance, bringing an inflatable pool float is recommended. It’s a tranquil and photogenic spot — ideal for a laid-back day soaking up the Cretan sun.

8. Arkadi Monastery – Spiritual and Historical Beauty

The Arkadi Monastery is one of the most significant monuments in Crete, both historically and spiritually. Surrounded by peaceful gardens with beautiful flowers and lushious grapes, this 16th-century monastery is a place of quiet reflection and architectural beauty.

9. Balos Beach – The Jewel of Crete

Often considered the most beautiful beach in Crete, Balos Beach boasts turquoise waters, soft white sand and a huge rock formation. It’s a bit of a climb to get there, but it’s absolutely worth the effort. While many visitors wear flip-flops, sturdy sandals or hiking shoes are highly recommended for the rocky trail.

10. Preveli Beach – Palm Trees and Cliffside Views

Preveli Beach is famous for its palm forest and unique river that flows into the sea. The real beauty, however, is the view from above – a perfect photo opportunity for panoramic snaps.
