Zagreb, the vibrant capital of Croatia, is often overlooked by tourists. Most tourists usually head straight to the popular coastal destinations like Split and Dubrovnik. However, Zagreb offers a hidden gems and plenty to explore, all without the crowds. Therefore a daytrip to Zagreb should be on your itinerary If you are driving into Croatia.
Despite being the country’s capital, Zagreb is compact enough to explore in just one day. In this article, I’ll show you how to make the most of your day in Zagreb and what are the best places to visit!


Croatian National Theatre
Start your morning with a visit to the iconic Croatian National Theatre in Zagreb. This stunning yellow Baroque-style building, constructed in 1895, is a masterpiece of architecture. Still in active use today, it hosts an impressive lineup of opera, ballet, and drama performances throughout the year. Take a walk around the theatre to admire its grand façade and intricate details. The surrounding park, adorned with vibrant flowers and greenery, provides the perfect backdrop for photos and a peaceful escape in the heart of the city.


Old town Zagreb
Begin your journey in Zagreb’s old town, the ideal destination for shopping enthusiasts. Whether you’re looking for chic boutique stores or your favorite big-name chains, Zagreb has something for everyone. Besides this the city has a variety of shopping centers as well. Don’t miss the chance to visit the Oktogon, an elegant and photogenic passage located within a shopping center. With its ornate roof, it’s a hidden gem and a perfect spot for photos.
Afterwards, make your way to the north side of the city, where you can explore some of Zagreb’s cultural highlights. A must-see is the Zagreb Cathedral, a stunning landmark that is the tallest building of Croatia.






Stone gate (Kamenita Vrata)
As you make your way toward the Upper Town of Zagreb, be sure to pass through the iconic Stone Gate, locally known as Kamenita Vrata. This is not just an ordinary gate—it’s one of Zagreb’s most revered religious sites. According to legend, a devastating fire once consumed the original wooden gate. Miraculously, the flames spared a painting of the Virgin Mary and Child, whose artist remains unknown. This extraordinary event turned the Stone Gate into a shrine, and the painting is now considered a symbol of divine intervention. Visitors often light candles and pray here, adding to the serene and spiritual atmosphere.
After capturing some memorable photos, take a well-deserved break at the nearby Time for Wine restaurant. Enjoy a glass of wine or another drink of your choice—it’s your holiday, so midday wine is always acceptable!


St Mark’s church
From the Stone Gate, take a short walk to the iconic St. Mark’s Church, one of Croatia’s most famous landmarks. This stunning church is easily recognized by its vividly tiled roof, which features the crests of Zagreb and Croatia, showcasing a piece of the country’s rich history and pride. Unfortunately the church was under construction during our trip but the roof was still visible.


Ivana Tkalčića Street (Ulica Ivana Tkalčića)
To conclude your visit to Zagreb make your way to Ivana Tkalčića Street, one of Zagreb’s most vibrant and charming evening hotspots. This lively pedestrian street is lined with a wide variety of restaurants, cozy cafes, and trendy bars, making it the perfect place to unwind after a day of exploring. If you’re in the mood for a more upscale dining experience, head to the Khala Restaurant & Bar, known for its refined menu featuring Japanese fusion.
