4x Must-Visit Fairytale Castles in Luxembourg

Luxembourg, a small yet picturesque country nestled in the heart of Europe, is known for its lush greenery, rolling hills, and majestic castles. If you’re planning a trip to Luxembourg, dedicating a day to exploring its castles is a must. With so many to choose from, I have curated a list of four stunning must visit castles in Luxembourg that deserve a spot on your travel itinerary!

Esch-sur-Sûre Castle

Nestled in the charming village of Esch-sur-Sûre, this castle sits atop a hill surrounded by the tranquil Sûre River. Dating back to the 13th century, the castle originally served as a strategic fortification before becoming a royal residence. Though now mostly in ruins, its idyllic surroundings and historical significance still make it a must-see in my opinion.

Tip: Where to find the Best Viewpoint of Esch-sur-Sûre Castle
For a breathtaking view of the castle, take a short hike starting behind the hotel and restaurant Le Postillon. Follow the path uphill to the left, and within five minutes, you’ll reach a scenic vantage point. Adventurous photographers can climb over the fence to a nearby rock for the perfect shot—just be cautious, as the rocks can be slippery.

Meysembourg Castle

Tucked away in the heart of Luxembourg, Meysembourg Castle is a hidden gem surrounded by serene forests and rolling hills. The site has been home to a residence since the 12th century, with the current neo-Renaissance structure built in 1880. Although privately owned and closed to the public, its stunning exterior and enchanting setting make it worth a visit. The surrounding area is also super green and idyllic.

Vianden Castle

Vianden Castle is one of Luxembourg’s most iconic landmarks and a masterpiece of medieval architecture. The castle sits on top of a hill overlooking the the town of Vianden. This 11th-century castle was constructed atop ancient Roman ruins and is one of the largest castles in the Benelux region. Its rich history includes notable residents like the Count of Vianden and King Willem II of the Netherlands. Inside the castle, you’ll find exhibitions showcasing its history and rooms decorated to reflect various eras. This castle is a must visit if you are visiting Luxembourg!

Beaufort Castle

Located in the picturesque Mullerthal region, also known as “Little Switzerland,” Beaufort Castle is a captivating ruin that combines a medieval castle and a Renaissance fort. For just €5, you can explore the castle’s interior, unfortunately we didn’t have the time to do so.

Tip: Pair your trip to Beaufort Castle with a hike through the nearby Mullerthal trail, the hiking here is so spectacular it feels like you are in the mountains of the Alps!
