Hvar Lavender Fields: Is it worth the visit?
When you think of lavender fields, the famous landscapes of Provence in France might come to mind. But did you know Croatia also has its own lavender fields? The islands of Hvar and Brač are home to lush lavender fields that offer a unique experience away from the crowds. In this article, I want to share my opinion on whether visiting the fields on Hvar is worth the visit or if you might be better off skipping them altogether!

Hvar: More Than Beaches and Parties
Hvar Island is a well-known tourist destination in Croatia, famous for its vibrant nightlife, stunning beaches, and crystal-clear waters. However, it’s also one of Croatia’s main producers of lavender. While much of the island attracts tourists for the reasons mentioned above, the lavender fields offer a peaceful escape from the touristic scene of the island.
Where to Find the Lavender Fields
The lavender fields are located near the quaint village of Brusje, nestled at the top of the mountain on Hvar Island. These fields are easy to find, as they are marked on Google Maps. Unlike the perfectly straight rows of lavender in Provence, the lavender on Hvar grows naturally among rocks and bushes, blending seamlessly with the surrounding landscape.

What Makes Hvar’s Lavender Fields Special?
The appeal of these lavender fields goes beyond the flowers themselves! Here are two reasons why:
- Spectacular Views: The fields are perched high on the mountain, offering breathtaking views of the Adriatic Sea and Hvar’s rugged coastline.
- Peaceful Escape: Unlike Hvar’s busy beaches and nightlife, the lavender fields are a hidden gem without the crowds. You can enjoy the serene atmosphere and take in the natural beauty without distractions.

Support Local: Lavender Products to Bring Home
Don’t leave Hvar without picking up some locally made lavender products. A great way to support the local farmers and community. Across the island, you’ll find shops and stalls selling items like:
- Lavender essential oils
- Handcrafted soaps
- Lavender sachets (perfect for keeping in your wardrobe)
- Natural beauty products
These products also make for great souvenirs or gifts!
When to visit the Hvar’s Lavender Fields?
Plan your visit in June or July, when the lavender is in full bloom. I would recommend June as it’s still outside the high summer season and Hvar will be less crowded then in July.
Is visiting Hvar’s Lavender Fields Worth It?
Absolutely! While the lavender fields of Hvar might not be as famous as those in Provence, they offer a unique, tranquil experience. The combination of fragrant lavender, stunning mountain views, and a peaceful ambiance makes it well worth the trip. Plus, you’ll get to see a quieter side of Hvar that most tourists miss. However if you are coming to Hvar to party and relax on the beach then maybe it’s not for you 😉
